Backing up your template is important, and can one day save you tons of work. Always backup your template before you make any changes to it. This way, if anything goes wrong, you can alway backtrack and everything will be as before.
This is how to backup your template. Sign into Dashboard, select the relevant blog, click TEMPLATE tab and you will be in the Template Edit window. Highlight all the text in the template, right-click and copy (or ctrl+C), open notepad, paste the copied template into notepad. Save with a suitable name. I would suggest the title of the blog followed by the date.

I am on a Mac using Safari. Is it the same if I save my content to a word document since I dont have notepad?
It is not advisable to use Word to save a template as Words add unwanted stuff to the documents like formatting etc. You can use NoteTab at Notetab. They have a free version and it has more features than Notepad.

Just wanted to tell you it is so important to back up your template.
I accidentally deleted most of my sidebar codes in the past week, but luckily I made a backup after I read this post at the beginning of the month, so with some sweat and concentration, I was able to put the HTML codes back and then "build" my sidebar from scratch.
I also make a point now to save codes of new things I put into the template, so I did not have to go back to the websites to get it again.
Thanks for the Word advice - understand now why some of the things did not work properly. I received some messages about corrupt codes, but found that if I saved after each edit, and pasted a new code then, the problem was eventually fixed.
I put links to your sites onto my blog today as well. I have learned a lot by reading your blogs.
