How to redirect from old url to new url

Update 18 May 2007: For redirecting with New Blogger, refer to this new post Redirecting New Blogger blog to another site

You want to use a new url for your blog. Your site have been indexed and have many incoming links. You want to keep you original blogspot.com url but want viewers to be automatically redirected to another website with the url http://newurl.com? This is how you do it. Paste this code (Note: whenever you want to make any changes to the template, it is always wise to backup the template first. If you are not familiar with that, refer to this post: Backing up and changing your Blogger template.

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://newurl.com">

Update 5 May 2007. For those using New Blogger template, use

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://newurl.com /"></meta> instead.

Notice the space between url=http://newurl.com and /"

somewhere in between the <head></head> tags like this:

<head>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://newurl.com">
</head>

Update 12 May 2007: I have tested the above method and also other methods using Javascript, but all of them resulted in a 404 error (Page not found). I think blogspot blogs are very prone to hijacking by spammers who do a redirect to their own sites. I think this has come to the notice of Blogger and probably they have done something that makes the method not work anymore.

So does this mean, I can get a .com domain name and then use this to redirect the blogspot content to the .com? And will I still be able to compose everything at blogspot? Will it show up on both sites?

Peter Chen said...

Yes to both.

Peter Chen said...

Sorry, missed that part about the content. You can redirect visitors to the .com, not the content of the blog.

Beauty Salon|Santa Monica|Los Angeles, CA 90405 said...

Peter, many thanks for the reply.

Let me be more specific.

My Blog has a hyphenated URL.

The Google Search Engine Algorithm recently penalized the Search Engine ranking for such URL's.

For example, for most keywords you will not find a hyphenated URL in the top ten on Google.

These URL's are not blocked, but their ranking has dropped significantly.

Therefore, I am going to create a new, non-hyphenated URL.

I assume that I must copy everything on the old domain to the new domain given your comment that the content does not follow?

Then, I can apply the code you posted to the old Blog in order to redirect all visitors to the new domain/URL?

The REAL QUESTION then becomes will the Search Engines properly follow, index and rank the new site if all other things are held equal?

Thanks in advance.

Search engines penalize Meta Refresh code. The reason for that is people used to stuff a page with keywords for search engines, and then Meta Refresh to a page for users. If you do, please make it wait more than 5 seconds (instead of 0 indicated in that code).
The most "search engine friendly" redirect is a server side permanent redirect (server code 301). Most server side redirects default at 302 (temporary), so make sure you pay attention to that.

David Geer said...

Yeah I used your code snippet between the head tags and it kept refreshing on the site redirected to endlessly.

David Geer said...

I put your code between the head tags and though it does go to the other site it keeps refreshing on that site endlessly.

Peter Chen said...

Strange. I tested it before publishing and I didn't notice any refresh.

In my case, I have the blog and blog archives now published to my own domain, but also still up at blogspot. What I really would like to do is get the blog entries on blogspot removed without removing them from my domain but I'm getting no help on that from Blogger.

Peter Chen said...

I have no experience with publishing to my own domain (I suppose via FTP). But with my limited knowledge of that, I think when you do that, your old URL is released to the public, and I understand that are spammers who are out to grab such available URL's quite quickly. I would suggest you try to claim your old URL back by starting a new blog with the old URL and see if that works.

Hi, hope someone can help me. I have 3 blogs, and I want to make redirections to two of them to the third one. They are all blogger blogs. name.blogspot.com (look in my details).
I am trying and trying to do that.. but just cant make it... copying the code in this post and pasting it in many places on the blog code doesnt help... any advice?! is it possible to make redirections of blogspot pages to other blogspot pages?! thanks!

Peter Chen said...

You say you copy and paste direct into the template. That wouldn't work. You have to change the URL. You will have to delete http://newurl.com and type in its place the real URL before you paste it into the template.

You can keep the content, but I understand that search engines penalise duplicate content.

When I changed my blog address from http://jweissdiary.blogspot.com to http://transworkplace.blogspot.com, I was able to redirect those who went to the old site's main page, but those who clicked on a links specific posts on the old site got a "page not found message." After many dead-ends, I figured out a way.

I duplicated my blog using the mirroring software at httrack.com, and creating a duplicate of my blog on my PC. Then, I went into the files created by httrack, and found the "index" file that it created with all my old content. I right-clicked to view source, copied that source file into my blogger template on the old
site (switching to classic template format first), added in a meta-refresh, and voila, all old blogposts now automatically redirect to the new site. This does not bring them directly to the post they were looking for, but at least they're at my site.

I bet there's a way to make this work better.

Peter Chen said...

Hi Dr Jillian Todd Weiss,

Thanks for the tip, I will be testing out your tip if time permit, and if works out, including being able to make new post on the mirrored site, I will make a report on it with an acknowledgement of the source of the tip plus a link to your website. IF I do that, I will need to know what website you will want to be linked to.

Candace Dempsey said...

I just found this info on another site. It doesn't say anything about needing to move the content.

Am I missing something? Don't want to do this if it's going to be a mess.
Here's what I found:
If you want to change it,

1. Go to your Dashboard.
2. Click on Settings.
3. Click on Publishing
4. The first box down the page is where you change your portion of the Blogspot url. It is of course subject to availabilty, and they will let you know while you sit there. No long waiting.
5. Scroll down and Save Settings.

If your blog has been in existence for any length of time or if there have been very many links already made to it, you ought not to change it. You may also have to resubmit any forms you've filed with the search engines.

Don't worry about the Archive posts. All of them will be appropriately changed.

END.

Peter Chen said...

Hi Candace,

Transfering may involve some tedious manual copy-pasting from one blog to the other. You will have to open the post editor for one post by one post in the EDIT HTML mode so that all HTML (links, images, etc.) can be copied and transfered over.

You can use HTTrack to mirror the site, but I still don't know how to use the mirrored site to restore the blog, and don't know if it is at all possible.

Peter Chen said...

Hi Candence,

Yes, you can change the URL to a new URL and I do have a post on that How to change the URL. If you do that, you do not need to transfer any post. Everything will remain the same except the URL. However, if your blog has been on the web for a long time, and have been indexed by search engines, plus have plenty on inbound links, you will have to think very carefully about following this route as you will have to start from scratch for search engines, and your exising links to your site will become dead links that lead to Page Not Found.

It is more work, but if you don't want to lose your search engine ranking and links, starting another blog and transfering the content over, and then doing a redirect may be a better idea.

hey, im hoping you can help me! I wish I had come across your blog before i messed mine up!

you see i bought a URL but i didnt get hosting, so I want to redirect people from my domain to my blogspot. I did this by paying redirection.net $7

The thing is is that I changed my publishing on my blogspot to my URL when I was messing around with it. So now my blogspot is publishing to my url and my url is redirecting to my blogspot so its a hell of a mess! so basically i cant do anything!

How do I get back into my settings of my blogspot to change the publishing?

Peter Chen said...

Hi Pickster,

I see 2 solutions for you.

1. Get redirect.net to redirect traffic to your new site.

2. If 1 is not practical, etc., redirect traffic from your blogspot address to your new address.

Hi Peter, thanks for getting back on to me. Sadly neither of you solutions worked for me!

my blogspot is the750dollarproject.blogspot.com and my url is www.the750dollarproject.com

When i log into Blogger.com all I can change is my profile and not my actual blog settings!

Any idea how to do this?

how do i access my settings on my dashboard? there doesnt seem to be a link or a tab anywhere because i changed the publishing to my url!

Peter Chen said...

Hi pickster,

You got to get into your template editor. Is yours an old classic template or the New Blogger template?

Hi Pickster,

The screenshot does not show the pertinent part of the Dashboard properly. Can you use Irfanview photo editor or any other photo editor that allows cropping. (Irfanview is free and very useful). Crop out the part that is important as I can't see properly what is in there. It is too small. Upload the cropped screenshot again and I will have a second look.

Hi Pickster,

I am afraid you are concentrating on the wrong part of the Dashboard. The most important part, I cannot see from your second screenshot. I only see a tiny portion to the screen below

However, from the very little of what I saw, I don't think you have a blog yet. Anyway, if you can redo the cropping, I will see what I can make out of it.

Hi Dipesh,

You must be using the New Blogger template. Use
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://newurl.com" /> instead. Notice that there is a space between url=http://newurl.com" and /"
so the end part of the meta tag is
url=http://newurl.com" />

Hi -Ken-,

I am afraid you made a big mistake. What you should have done is create a new blog and leave your old blog URL alone. Now no one can help you get back your old URL unless by some miracle the person who took it agree to give it back to you. Hopefully it will remain blank and you would not be faced with some situations like what is described in Why you should not delete your blog or change the URL.

Hi Megnomad,

I am afraid I will have to delete your comment because you posted a long inactive (not clickable) URL which became a long unbroken line that extend into the sidebar and can cause problems or become unsightly. Perhaps I should refer you to Make active (clickable) link in posts and comments.

I wonder why you would want to redirect a .com (own domain) to a blogspot.com blog (sub-domain), property of Blogger, not yours. Most bloggers if they have their own .com domain would prefer to redirect traffic from their blogspot.com blog to their .com domain using Blogger generous New Blogger custom domain.

This redirection is automatically done for you once you convert your blogspot blog to New Blogger custom domain.

Hi Peter, thanks for that, I went ahead and deleted the comment, sorry about that!
The reason I wanted to redirect that way is because my dot com went down,(some new cpanel stuff that didn't work for me) I still own the domain name and I am going to have to rebuild that site altogether so I didn't want to lose views/traffic in the meantime. I will use my blogspot as a catchall until I get a new site up.
Anyway I figured it out and it was extremely simple and I guess I just wasn't paying attention or was a bit too tired!
Thanks again.
