How to do categories

UPDATE 22 July 2008: This is an old post done before LABELS were introduced. For those blogs still using old Blogger classic template, please refer to Label (categories) list for old classic Blogger template and Scroll box for labels (categories).

Currently Blogger has no provision for doing categories, a very useful feature. If you want this, you will have to hack or do a work around. There are various ways, but I think this is the simplest:

1. If you don't already have a del.icio.us (close new window to get back to this page) account, create one. This methods uses del.icio.us tags. I already have one but I created another account specifically for this purpose. This is highly recommended. (If you are not familiar with del.icio.us, go to Introduction to Del.icio.us (click "Back" button to get back to this page)
2. Go to the post page for the post you want to tag and tag it. If you are unfamiliar with how to do these, click this link: Introduction to Del.icio.us (Click "Back" button to get back to this page). On the top-right hand side of del.icio.us page click on the tag you just created, and on that page note the url. The easiest way to do this is to highlight the url on the address bar and copy it. An alternative way to do it is to right-click on the tag and select "Save link as..." (this is for FireFox. For other browsers, the wordings will be different).
3. Log into Dashboard, select the relevant blog for which you want to create categories and click the TEMPLATE tab.
4. Creat a new "paragraph" or "links" in the sidebar by adding the codes you see in the screenshot below into the template where you want the "Categories" to be.
click on the screenshot to enlarge it

You will have to modify the url and the "description" to suit your own circumstances, for example, changing
<a href="http://del.icio.us/dummies/general">General</a><br />

to
<a href="tag url">tag description</a><br />

5. Change the url and "description" of each tag you have for your "categories"
6. Repeat for the other categories you want to add. Add more links if you have more than mine shown in the screenshot, delete the excess if you have less.
7. Preview the changes (by clicking the PREVIEW tab on the template editor to make sure this is what you want. Make corrections otherwise.
8. Save the template and republish.
9. Surf to each posts and tag them with one or more categories.
10. A reminder. It is always a wise move to save the template before you make any modifications to it.

To familiarise yourself with how the system works, why not try it by clicking on some of the categories at the top of the sidebar.

P.S. Got the idea for this from this website.

For other more complicated ideas on how to do categories for Blogger, go to Fresh Tags, Blogger categories with del.icio.us, Freshblog, Labelr.

Hi,

Just a note on FreshTags: at it's most basic, it just takes this same info from delicious and puts it into your sidebar. This means that readers don't need to leave your blog.

Thank you for posting all the articles that teaches new blogger how-to? I have one question on the "Archive". My Archive bar shows by the date of every articles I have which is a long list. I like how you organize the Archive by month. Can you tell me how do you change the code? Thanks, Sabrina.

Thanks for your help.

One other question, instaed of listing the categories, is there a way to show them as clouds like in del.icio.us with tags with higher frequencies in bold fonts?

Peter Chen said...

This is a simple straight forward method. For fancier stuff, you will have to try Freshtags, etc., I think.

A basic blogger help! What a good idea!
I never understood why one had to change his template just to view a blogger template so I listed them here and also some bookmark blog footer codes.
And I agree with greg FreshTags is great but the explanations aren't very easy... some help and examples would be nice(?)

The "previous posts" shows only 10 posts? How I can sho all posts or any other way?

Peter Chen said...

I heard there are hacks for this, but I either have not come across them, or if I have, have forgotten about them. Try to search for them on the web.

In order to add categories-
after opening up template tab, where to next? Add html or simply add page element?

Where do you add the code to? In edit template?

Peter Chen said...

Hi Phil,

This post was published long ago and is meant for blogs using the old classic template. You will have to let us know whether you use the New Blogger template or the old classic template. Refer to old classic Blogger template or New Blogger template.

If it is old classic template, refer to Template tutorial: add content via template as a guide.

Theres an easier way to do categories, heres how i do it, when creating a new post, below where you type your post, there is a "Post Option" link, clock that and it will open a tags text box. now type in for example comedy, and submit your post. now once you view ur post, it will say below it comedy. now click that, and it will display all your post with the tag comedy. now edit your templates and create in HTML a menu that says categories, the hyper link the categories menu item, to the comedy tag link.
